Meeting for the first time, safely
A first date with someone from an app is usually just a slightly nervous coffee. A few simple habits keep it that way — and make it easy to leave if it is not going well.
Before you go
- Chat enough to feel you know who you are meeting, and prefer a verified profile.
- Tell a friend the place, the time and your date’s profile name, and agree a time to check in.
- Keep your home address, office and full name to yourself for now.
- Charge your phone and keep enough money to get home.
Choosing the place
Pick a café, a restaurant or a busy mall — somewhere with other people and staff around. For a first date, avoid either person’s home, a hotel or anywhere isolated, however casual the suggestion sounds.
Daytime or early evening makes it easier to get home, and easier to end things early.
Getting there and back
Travel on your own — metro, cab or your own vehicle — so you never depend on your date for a ride. Cab apps let you share a live trip with a friend, so use that.
On the date
- Keep an eye on your drink, and do not accept one you did not see being poured.
- Drink less than you normally would.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it is fine to end the date and go.
- Step away and message your friend if you need an excuse to leave.

Is it rude to leave a date early?
